Denver Begins 8th Avenue Viaduct Maintenance
Residents should be aware of new travel patterns in place while crews work to strengthen the structure
DENVER – Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI), in collaboration with Hamon Infrastructure, will start repair and maintenance work next Monday, August 12, on the 8th Avenue viaduct between Mariposa and Tejon streets on the west side of Denver. This work that’s being funded by the voter-approved Elevate Denver Bond will make spot-repairs to the bridge deck and replace the viaduct’s expansion joints, which accommodate the natural movement of the bridge and allow it to expand and contract.
During work hours, drivers should anticipate the bridge to be reduced to one lane of through-travel with either flaggers or an automatic light device being used to alternate the flow of traffic. Drivers should expect to encounter delays and may want to consider an alternate route. Crews will begin reconstructing sidewalk areas first, with a shuttle service on either end of the bridge assisting bicycle and pedestrian traffic across the construction zone. Outside of working hours, pedestrians will be able to use the sidewalk as normal.
Normal working hours will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday and weekend work may occur, as necessary. The work is anticipated to be completed in March 2025, weather permitting, and schedules are subject to change.
