Lyft E-Bike and E-Scooter Operations in Denver Transitioning to Bird

Lyft E-Bike and E-Scooter Operations in Denver Transitioning to Bird

Denver – The City and County of Denver, Lyft, Inc. (Lyft), and Bird announced today that Lyft will transfer its shared e-bike and e-scooter license and all its requirements to Bird, as Lyft narrows its product portfolio and discontinues operation of standalone dockless bikes and scooters. Bird will begin day-to-day operations in Denver in December. Both this License Agreement and the other existing agreement with Lime expire in May 2026

After the transition, riders will be able to rent Bird-operated e-bikes and e-scooters through both the Lyft and Bird apps. Additionally, the 115+ parking corrals deployed by Lyft will remain deployed and be integrated into Bird’s operations.

As part of the transition, Bird is working with Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) to ensure there are no service disruptions for riders as part of this change. Existing Lyft Community Pass members will be transitioned to Bird’s Access program, which will have the same pricing structure of $3 per month, with free unlocks and $.05/min trip fees. Additionally, members of Lyft’s “5280” membership program will be provided an opportunity to join Bird’s “5280” membership program.

“DOTI is committed to continuing the success of the Shared Bike and Scooter Program as a sustainable transportation choice,” said Amy Ford, Executive Director of Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure. “We are excited to work with Bird to ensure a smooth transition and maintain a robust program.”

“We’re proud to be able to support DOTI’s efforts to provide residents with a sustainable and convenient transportation alternative, which complements existing public transit infrastructure and the incredible bike lane infrastructure already in place,” said Austin Marshburn, Sr. Director of Government Partnerships for Bird. “We’re looking forward to collaborating with DOTI to further enhance the program and serving Denver residents going forward.”

“We have greatly valued our partnership with the City and County of Denver over the past four years,” said Caroline Samponaro, VP of External Affairs for Lyft Urban Solutions. “We look forward to helping Denverites continue to get around on two wheels by offering Bird devices in the Lyft app going forward.”

Denver’s current e-scooter and e-bike share program began in 2021, providing residents, employees, and visitors with convenient options to get around Denver without a car. Riders have since taken more than 19 million rides.

DOTI is beginning a community engagement process in preparation for the award of new licensing agreements for the Shared Bike and Scooter Program. The results will be helpful as DOTI begins planning for establishment of new operator agreements, with the current agreements expiring in 2026. To inform the process, the city launched a public survey to gather valuable feedback from the community. The survey is for riders and non-riders, aiming to gain insight into e-scooter use in Denver and a better understanding of who’s using e-scooters, when and why they ride, what kinds of trips they take, and the factors that encourage scooter use.
