[Denver May 8, 2023] This week the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure began installing new 20mph signs on local streets citywide. By updating these signs and reducing the speed limit on our local streets, we want to draw attention to the topic of speed in general and help create a culture of safety within our neighborhoods where we are more likely to see people walking and biking.
As part of our strategy moving forward, we plan to reduce the overall number of signs out now from with a focus on areas that enter onto the local streets from our arterial streets. We will also post gateway signs as people enter Denver off the highway, that state the speed limit on local roads is 20 mph. We anticipate that removing/replacing these signs will take up to three years to fully implement from the time we begin.
Lowering the speed limit is only part of the solution if we want to address safety on our streets citywide. DOTI is continuously adding safety treatments in Denver, to slow drivers down and get them to focus on the road. Our Vision Zero action plan is centered on our most vulnerable road users and will help us invest in areas where improvements are needed most, build out our multimodal network, and improve street designs.
We’ve created yard signs residents can post reminding drivers to slow down. To request yard signs, please visit: https://forms.office.com/g/fiuh1PhVUZ. On the site, you can request the amount you want and schedule a time to come pick those up from the Webb building.
As you distribute these, please advise residents who wish to display a yard sign that the 20mph speed limit ordinance change only applies to local and residential streets – so streets with no stripes or centerlines.
