| The Denver Broncos are preparing to build a new stadium and mixed-use development in La Alma Lincoln Park, which could invite billions of dollars of investment and development into one of the city’s most storied neighborhoods.
For some residents of this close-knit community, it’s a reminder of the days of “urban renewal” — a dark era that threatened the displacement of thousands of families that spurred the rise of Denver’s Chicano movement and the creation of the Santa Fe Art District. The Broncos say they hear those concerns and want to be good neighbors. The team has met with residents about the stadium and has been negotiating a community benefits agreement with a neighborhood collective. Mayor Mike Johnston’s administration has vowed to build or strengthen systems that prevent displacement, like land trusts and affordable housing. |
